ITC Category 2 Thermography Training

If you’re a certified Category I thermographer who is ready to take a deeper dive into the world of infrared imaging and inspections, Category II certification will give you the practical inspection knowledge needed to level up your thermography game.

Based on established ISO 18436-7 and ASNT CP-105 guidelines, the Category II certification course curriculum will provide a comprehensive examination of subjects critical to success as a Category II thermographer.

ITC Category 2 topics

A prerequisite for ITC Category 2 is that the student must hold an ITC Category 1 certificate

In this certification course, you’ll build on what you have learned in the first certificate and get to know important camera specifications and how they can influence image interpretation and measurement along with discussing advanced camera features and options for data collection and image processing.

Other topics include:

  • Expand on infrared science and measurement concepts with emphasis on radiation exchange, energy distribution, and other topics that will enhance your analytical skills.

  • Discuss false anomalies and how these can provide misleading results.

  • Broaden your understanding of heat transfer theory to provide the knowledge needed to interpret and analyse thermal anomalies under a variety of applications and conditions.

  • Perform practical, hands-on exercises that will enhance your ability to measure temperatures, analyse results, and diagnose critical issues.

  • Discuss advice for professionally and safely performing electrical, mechanical, and building inspections.

  • Review a variety of real-world application imagery and anecdotes from the field.

  • Discuss camera selection advice based on application.

  • Review qualitative and quantitative analysis, discuss fault criteria and classification, and understand how diagnostics and prognostics apply to condition monitoring.

  • Provide an overview of reporting software and advice for report design, layout, and content per ISO 18434-1

  • End of course test 60 multiple choice questions.

FAQs

  • The Level 2 course builds on Level 1 and is best suited for professionals already using thermal cameras regularly and looking to deepen knowledge. As a Level 2 thermographer, you’ll be expected to guide less experienced staff, recommend inspection methods, and take responsibility for data accuracy and reporting.

You must have completed a Level 1 certification and be ready to present a case study to attend Level 2.

    • Infrared science in depth: Radiation laws, blackbodies and spectral response

    • Optics and detectors: Filters, coatings and transmission

    • Measurement techniques: NETD, IFOV, MFOV and image accuracy

    • Data interpretation: Advanced analysis, diagnostics and corrective actions

    • Reporting and leadership: Coaching others, refining image capture and producing high-level reports

This course prepares you for greater responsibility and allows you to take a strategic role in thermographic inspection processes.
