FLIR pride themselves on providing “superpower” vision and are always pushing the envelope when it comes to new thermal imaging equipment. We love something new and innovative here at Thermascan too, so in this month’s blog we’re bringing you news of one such new piece of equipment; the FLIR T840 camera.
Designed to help electric utility and other thermography professionals comfortably complete surveys of electrical equipment both indoors and outdoors, the T840 boasts an integrated eyepiece viewfinder and a bright 4-inch colour LCD display. This makes it easy to use at any time, day or night, and can comfortably be used to conduct inspections outside in challenging lighting conditions.
If you read our recent article on how to safely and properly conduct an electrical survey, you’ll know how important it is to conduct surveys in a timely and efficient manner to avoid costly long outages. With this in mind, we’re very impressed with the T840 as it provides a host of functions to help you save time on-site. Quick-access menus, folders and settings are all easily operated using FLIR’s intuitive controls, which include rapid-response touchscreen functionality. The camera also allows you to observe critical findings immediately, through Wi-Fi streaming direct to the FLIR Tools® app. On top of all of this, you can produce precise documentation with embedded GPS locations included.
FLIR T840 Thermal Camera advantages
Thermal Cameras have a lot of advantages when it comes to the detection of electrical faults, as they’re quick and non-contact which means the use of equipment can be uninterrupted while the thermal survey is taking place. The FLIR T840 can be used effectively both indoors and outdoors, making it versatile and useful to a far wider audience. Some examples of its uses are monitoring pylon connections, keeping power flowing through distribution networks at residential & commercial level, and checking distribution panels, transmission lines & capacitors.
If an electrical connection in your electrical transmission system isn’t working properly, it may not operate efficiently or safely. It’s important to regularly inspect every connection to ensure that they’re in working order, but this can be a challenge. Every system has lots of small connections, often located high up or out of reach. Importantly, connections get hot before they fail. Conducting regular surveys of substations and transmission lines using thermal imaging devices such as the T840 gives you a great snapshot (excuse the pun!) of potential problems. You can measure temperature from a safe distance and diagnose problems before outages occur, therefore minimising the cost of repairs, maximising equipment life, and keeping the power on for your customers.
Whatever you use it for, the T840 will help you quickly diagnose problems before they turn into expensive failures!
Thermal imaging equipment such as this can be effective in many different scenarios. Industries that make great use of this type of kit include building surveyors, mining, refractory, marine, mechanical and industrial applications. Watch this space for an upcoming article focusing on some of these different applications; you might be surprised at just how varied the use of our equipment can get
This camera will help you, the professional, conduct highly efficient electrical surveys in a quick and easy manner whilst providing you with extremely accurate results. Faults such as insulator defects, poor connections, internal fuse damage and electrical leakage can all be easily detected with the FLIR T840. The use of a high-end thermographic camera such as this can help to quickly identify faults in an electrical installation before they occur, and therefore prevent breakdowns, costly and time-consuming repairs and/or replacements, and even electrical fires.
